The linguistics of a new language
On this day in 1853, Central Public School officially opened, making it the first large properly graded school in British North America.
The Hunter Street school became a model across the province in that the education was free, compulsory, co-ed, strongly regulated and egalitarian. It became the oldest continuously operating school of its type in Ontario.
Central was built on an entire block of land between Bay and Park that cost $13,000. The building — designed “in the Roman style of architecture, simple and substantial” — was budgeted to cost $60,000. It was originally designed for 1,000 pupils.
